20 Steps to completing the FAFSA:
1. Go to fafsa.ed.gov
2. New to the FAFSA? Start a new FAFSA
3. Returning User? Login
4. Complete “student information” login with student’s full, legal first and last name
5. Get Started- Start 2015-2016 FAFSA if starting college in fall semester 2015
On this page, confirm the status of the student’s PIN here. If the SSN for the PIN and FAFSA match, the status should be either ACTIVE or PENDING CONFIRMATION 6. Create a password to return to a saved FAFSA
7. Introduction page-You are NOT required to read through these, but they provide good information about frequently asked questions about the FAFSA
8. Continue completing Student information section-students are NOT required to provide a driver’s license
9. School selection- Search for schools here, don’t forget to ADD the schools by clicking on “ADD”. You will want ALL schools for which you have applied to receive your FAFSA information for financial aid purposes!
10. Dependency status and special circumstances… ask for help you if you not sure!
11. Dependency status results- indicate if you “will provide parental information” or if you are “unable to provide parental information”
· Students who complete a FAFSA without parental information must be aware of two things. First, the student must immediately contact the school’s financial aid office to begin the process of a dependency override. Second, until a dependency override has been granted, the FAFSA will not calculate a student’s EFC.

13. Parent tax information- You will be answering this question for 2014 taxes. Options will include already complete, will file, or not going to file.
14. Parent financial information- try using the IRS Data Retrieval function
15. Sign and submit
16. Are you a preparer? This question should always be left a “NO”; it is only marked otherwise if you pay someone to complete the FAFSA for you
17. You should never, ever pay for FAFSA help!!
18. Both the student and one parent will sign electronically, using the four-digit PIN requested previously
19. Don’t forget to Agree to the terms of agreement
20. SUBMIT MY FAFSA NOW!
